Our Latest Projects

We're Built Differently

We were once two separate departments — Ancillary Services and Real Estate. Now, Space & Experiences combines our intimate knowledge of U of T’s community needs with the capacity to identify and develop innovative spaces and services.

Has the time change got you feeling the winter blues already?🥶Check out our new Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Lamps💡☀️in the Study Room (30 Charles, 3rd floor)!

☀️Seasonal Affective Disorder is a depressive symptom triggered by seasonal changes in the northern latitudes. SAD usually occurs in the fall and winter months when the days shorten, and sunlight starts to decrease. People struggling with SAD can feel sad or down during the day. Other symptoms may include low energy, needing more sleep than usual, and changes in appetite.

☀️One of the most effective ways to reduce the symptoms of SAD is through light therapy, which uses specially designed lamps to mimic natural sunlight. Exposure to this light stimulates the release of serotonin, boosting its levels in the body. Additionally, studies have shown that light therapy can improve mood and alleviate the distress often associated with the “winter blues.”

☀️To use the SAD lamp effectively, turn it on and place it 16-20 inches away from you. Use the lamp for 20-30 minutes while studying, reading, or relaxing.

☀️It is best to use the light in the morning to help maintain a proper sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm). Avoid using the light at night and ensure it is used at the same time every day to maintain consistency and reduce symptoms.

☀️Position the lamp above eye level and facing downwards to prevent it from shining directly into your eyes. This setup ensures you get the most benefit from the lamp while staying comfortable!
