Arts and Science Academic Mentors
Chestnut Residence

The Arts and Science Academic Mentors (AM) support primarily first year students in Arts and Science by designing and delivering impactful events that help build community among Arts and Science students and provide information about academic supports that are available to ease the transition from high school to university. There is some opportunity for remote work, but much of the work requires being on location at 89 Chestnut Street.
As an AM, you will plan, promote, facilitate, tidy, and report on events with the support of two other co-workers.
You will meet the following event requirements:
- Design and maintain the AM poster board to provide helpful academic support information for Arts and Science students (check weekly, change content monthly)
- 1/month pop-up event to inform students of helpful academic success resources. Pop-ups are events that take place in a busy location with a quick engagement opportunity/ piece of information to pass on while students are walking by.
- 3/term social events to build community with other Arts and Science students.
- Support occasional additional events run by the Residence Life Office that are aimed at Arts and Science students.
To fulfill this role and allow for your own learning, you will have ongoing support, supervision, and professional development from the Residence Education Coordinator. This job will allow you to enhance your skillset in professional communication, teamwork and collaboration, event planning and logistics, and leadership.
The AM role is a Work Study position and therefore you must meet Work Study eligibility.
We are seeking three candidates who all must be part of the faculty of Arts and Science. We will be hiring one Arts/Social Science student, one Science/Math student, and the third position can be filled by any Arts and Science discipline.
Preference will be given to students who will be living at Chestnut in 2025-2026, but anyone can apply.
Please note: These positions are part of the Work Study program and are contingent on approval by the Work Study program which will be confirmed in August.
Engineering Programming Ambassadors
Chestnut Residence | The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering

The Engineering Programming Ambassadors (EPAs) do a mix of event planning and study skill peer mentorship. EPAs support primarily first year Engineering students by planning, promoting, facilitating, tidying, and reporting on events with the support of two other co-workers. These events will range in topic from fun social events to hosting dinners where we invite Engineering professors to meet with students. EPAs will also be trained to support student academic success through peer-to-peer mentorship meetings on learning strategies.
There is some opportunity for remote work, but much of the work requires being on location at 89 Chestnut Street.
As an EPA, you will meet the following role requirements:
- Regularly scheduled peer-to-peer learning strategies mentorship.
- 2/term pop-up event to inform students of helpful academic success resources. Pop-ups are events that take place in a busy location with a quick engagement opportunity/ piece of information to pass on while students are walking by.
- 1/term social events to build community with other Engineering students.
- 1/term event where we host Engineering profs in the Dining Commons.

Chestnut EPAs will be hired as casual employees of the University of Toronto and will be compensated for the full academic year. The hourly wage is $20/hour. The time commitment of the role is variable from week to week. However, successful applicants can expect to work 3-6 hours per week. Meetings with the Residence Education Coordinator will occur during office hours. Most events you run will take place weekdays between 5-10pm, with occasional weekends.
To be eligible to be selected as an EPA, you must be a full-time student enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering in good academic standing. You need to be entering minimum second year. Preference will be given to past or present Chestnut students.
Chestnut Student Lounge Manager
Chestnut Residence

- Overseeing a team of approximately 18 student volunteers who are each responsible for a 3 hour shift once per week and ensuring a team based environment;
- Organizing and leading regular team meetings with members of the CSL Crew;
- Assisting with the management of the online space booking system;
- Assisting with the booking and logistics for events, programs, and initiatives that are scheduled in the space;
- Connecting and engaging with students who use the student spaces throughout Chestnut Residence.
- Any notes should be logged in the weekly log and items that require attention should be reported to the ADRE.
- Being a member of the Residence Affairs Committee (RAC) and report to the committee on any student space needs and issues at Chestnut Residence.
- Attending bi-weekly meetings with the Chestnut Residence Council (CRC) VP Internal to ensure clear communication about upcoming programming, space allotment, and lounge purchases.
- Attending weekly meetings with the ADRE as touch points and opportunities to conduct walk throughs of various managed spaces.

- Assigned shift(s) over Move-In Day weekend and orientation: Aug 23-Sept. 1.
- Be in good academic standing as most recently assessed by the University of Toronto.
- Have no outstanding balance on ACORN as of July 2025.
- Residence Dons must be available during move-in weekend, orientation, and during the first two weeks of classes for assigned shifts.

- Cultivate a safe, cohesive, and respectful community within the residence and assigned LLC community, working intentionally with Residence Life staff and Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering to support intentional LLC programming.
- Maintain a visible presence in the residence, including engaging with residents in common spaces such as the cafeteria and hallways, and during Don-on-Call (DOC) rounds.
- Enforce University and Residence policies, procedures, and rules while offering guidance and referrals to support services.
- Mediate conflicts between roommates and residents.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with residents and staff.
- Communicate regularly with residents through floor meetings).
- Support and engage with Floor Representatives and Floor Council to build community.
- Facilitate events and social connections to encourage resident participation in orientation and other community-building activities
B. Educator
- Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating responsible behavior, good academic standing, and citizenship.
- Fulfill programming requirements aligned with the Chestnut Residence Programming Curriculum for LLCs, ensuring that activities meet learning outcomes.
- Maintain professional relationships with all residents.
C. Administrator
- Attend all scheduled Don training and professional development sessions.
- Facilitate move-in and move-out procedures, as well as preview days, in line with Residence Life guidelines.
- Participate in regular Don-on-Call (DOC) shifts, responding to incidents and inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Address community standards violations and document these incidents appropriately.
- Ensure building safety and security and respond to emergencies as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of expenses, floor funds, and programming budgets.
- Assist with the Don hiring process, including recruitment and advertising.
- Ensure regular communication with the Residence Life Office by responding to emails and completing required reports.
- Complete programming forms in a timely manner as per the guidelines provided during Don Training.
Residence Dons are welcome to accept other employment within or outside of the University, so long as it does not conflict or interfere with the fulfillment of their employment obligations in residence.
Many duties and responsibilities of a Residence Don are responsive to circumstances affecting the residence and its residents and are often spontaneous and incapable of being scheduled. Residence Dons are expected to promptly and appropriately address all such circumstances.
Residence Dons are required to remain on campus until at least the day after the last day of undergraduate Arts & Science exams in both December and April and should be prepared to provide support and ongoing presence during reading weeks and long weekends on campus.
Each Don will be assigned a room in Chestnut Residence and be required to purchase a residence meal plan valid during the employment contract period.
As per the USW Don MOA, Article 18, wages will be paid in recurring equal monthly instalments over the period of employment of the Residence Don equal to:
- Fifty per cent (50%) of the fee for a standard single room.
- One hundred percent (100%) of the fee for the highest meal plan.
- A monthly installment of $62.50 as a Living Learning Community (LLC) is overseen.
Notes:
The amount above will also have applicable deductions before the final amount is issued.
As required by Article 18:04 of the Collective Agreement, a monthly deduction will be taken from these regular monthly net wages for the cost of the assigned room (billed at 50% of the standard fee).
Additionally, employees are required to purchase a meal plan as a condition of their employment, which will be posted monthly to your ACORN account.
The amount(s) will be pro-rated for any period of residence closure (e.g. December or January, etc.) or any partial month of employment.
A one-time $510 payment, less applicable deductions, will also be provided during the month of August.
During the University’s winter holiday closure period, when regular wages will not apply, Residence Dons are entitled to a payment of $150, less applicable deductions, per day of work scheduled, $175, less applicable deductions, per day of work scheduled with approved programming, except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day wherein the Residence Don will be entitled to a payment of $200, less applicable deductions, if scheduled for any part of these days.
